Freshwater Aquarium Setup Essentials

Setting up a freshwater aquarium requires several essential equipment and supplies. Here's a list of items you will typically need:

  1. Aquarium Tank: The size of the tank will depend on the type and number of fish you plan to keep. It should be made of glass or acrylic and have a sturdy frame. We always recommend starting with at least a 20 gallon!

  2. Aquarium Stand: A stand specifically designed for aquariums is necessary to provide proper support and stability for the tank. We have one stand specifically designed for aquariums otherwise we built a heavy duty shelving unit for the rest of our tanks.

  3. Filter: An aquarium filter is essential for maintaining water quality by removing impurities and providing oxygenation. There are various types of filters, including hang-on-back (HOB) filters, canister filters, and sponge filters. Choose one suitable for the tank size.

  4. Heater: Most freshwater fish require a stable temperature range. A submersible aquarium heater helps maintain the desired water temperature.

  5. Lighting: Proper lighting is important for the health and growth of plants in the aquarium. Choose aquarium lights designed for freshwater setups, and consider the lighting needs of the plants and fish you plan to keep.

  6. Substrate: The substrate is the material placed at the bottom of the tank. It can be gravel, sand, or specialized substrates for planted aquariums. The substrate provides a natural look, helps with plant growth, and serves as a home for beneficial bacteria. We use gravel!

  7. Décor: Aquatic décor items such as rocks, driftwood, and ornaments provide hiding spots and create a more natural environment for the fish. Ensure the decorations are aquarium-safe and won't alter the water chemistry. Décor isn't necessary to get started but who doesn't love decorations!?!?

  8. Water Conditioner: Tap water often contains chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals that are harmful to fish. A water conditioner helps neutralize these chemicals and make the water safe for your aquarium.

  9. Test Kit: A water test kit allows you to monitor the water parameters, such as pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Regular testing helps ensure a healthy environment for your fish. Test kits are very valuable when first getting started. They also come in handy if something isn't acting right in the tank.

  10. Fish Food: Choose a high-quality fish food suitable for the species you plan to keep. Consider the dietary needs of your fish, whether they are herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. We use a variety of fish food such as: flakes, shrimpee sinking sticks, algae wafers, brine shrimp and blood worms.

  11. Aquarium Thermometer: It's essential to monitor the water temperature consistently. An aquarium thermometer helps you ensure the water remains within the appropriate range for your fish.

  12. Fish Net: A net is handy for catching and moving fish without causing harm or stress.

  13. Gravel Vacuum: Regular water changes are necessary to maintain water quality. A gravel vacuum makes it easier to siphon off debris and excess waste from the substrate during water changes.

  14. Fish Medications: It's prudent to keep some basic fish medications on hand for treating common ailments like fungal infections, parasites, or bacterial diseases.

  15. Aquarium Siphon or Hose: This tool assists in water changes and maintenance by facilitating the removal and addition of water to the aquarium.

Remember to research the specific needs of the fish and plants you plan to keep, as some may have additional requirements beyond these essentials.
